Why you might need an asbestos removalist
If you’re doing any kind of renovation or demolition in an area with asbestos-containing materials – you legally have to get the asbestos removed safely.
Under WorkSafe regulations you effectively become a PCBU (Person Conducting Business or Undertaking). Anyone who comes on-site to your property is therefore your responsibility. This includes their health and well being. It is important that there’s no risk of them inhaling the asbestos when they’re undertaking any renovation work.

Asbestos in New Zealand
Asbestos was widely used in New Zealand for its fire-resistant and durable properties, particularly in products like roofing materials, cladding, and underground pipes. In older homes, asbestos can be found in roofing (Super 6, Decramastic Tile), “popcorn ceilings”, soffits, vinyl backing, cladding and fences.
Asbestos was banned in New Zealand for use in construction materials in 2000, meaning buildings since then are likely asbestos-free.

Why it’s important not to remove the asbestos yourself
Removing asbestos on your own is dangerous and can make the material airborne, potentially contaminating your entire home.
Strict guidelines exist for its disposal, and failing to follow them means a removal company can’t legally handle it.
Asbestos is hazardous when disturbed, even during minor repairs, as fibres can be inhaled and cause serious health issues.
The safest way to remove asbestos is to hire a licensed removal company.
It’s recommended to leave asbestos removal to experts like Breathe Easy who have the necessary training and equipment to do it safely.
